A quick note on griefers and killers. My contention is that griefers are outliers. That is they exist in the player base primarily because of designer neglect, but are not wanted in our Massives. A movie theater manager may remove a loud patron who exceeds the movie theater expectations of decorum. Movies theaters are not designed with an expectation of bad patron behavior. Similarly a pro football player may be ejected from a game for egregious behavior. Football game designers recognize that some player will have bad behavior and have instituted rules to separate these players from the game. I will go into more detail on griefers and killers in a future article, along with some suggestions on how to remove this behavior from our games.

I will illustrate this with what I consider a pure form of PvP, fighting over resources. In WoW there are resources which are xyyxxxqqx gathered and used in professions. These resources, such as herbs, spawn in semi-random locations throughout a zone. In order to successfully farm these herbs, one must know where they spawn and the easiest routes to get to them. On a PvE server this is a low challenge activity. If two players spot an herb, the first one to click on it gets it. There may be non-player characters near the herb but in the main these are not a challenge. On a PvP server this is a variable challenge activity. It is low challenge if unopposed. It is a high challenge activity if opposed. Two players, one herb, only one will farm the herb. This is pure, meaningful pvp.

Daniel's work?:wow power leveling
How did you guys come together on this project? Peter Franco: Steve and I have been making games for over 30 years combined. Our careers first crossed paths at Iguana Studios here in Austin, TX in the late 90s. Since then we have worked together at several companies, including Acclaim, and Midway Games. My wife, Heather Olson, had been working with the Johnston family for over 5 years, helping promote Daniel's art by creating art prints, t-shirts and collaborating on PR events around the Austin area. She had been talking with Dick Johnston (Daniel's brother) for a while about someday doing a video game consisting of Daniel's art and music. Steve and I left Midway several months apart and we each started our own indie development studio. Steve started the tech oriented Smashing Studios and I started the creative DrFunFun. At the beginning of the year we both decided it was the perfect time to join forces and develop a game based on one of our favorite esoteric and reclusive artists.

If you're familiar with Daniel's marker art, you'll see the vivid (sometimes garish) colors, the rough outlines and the primitive drawing style. Those are all things that we strove to maintain. The "cut-out" style cinemas were also done in a fashion that we feel resonates with Daniel's lo-fi world.

We are Daniel Johnston fans, and this project came from a sincere place. I think once we got started, they could see that. So ever since then, the tech was merely looked at as an exciting new way to spread some of Daniel's overflowing creativity.

Studying that book helped ensure that the fiction we created in our game fit in line with his ideas and concepts. Regarding Daniel himself, when we showed him the game several months ago, he thought it was a riot when he saw Satan come down from the sky and turn poor Jeremiah into a frog. When we showed it to him again just today, he said the same thing, as if he was seeing it for the first time.

So to resume, a cloned gameplay mechanics, with the same UI, the same character progression, the same world framework, such as the separation between instanced and open-world, the separation of maps/zones, the separation of factions(order vs chaos) inevitably affects and crushes the small and bashfully developed unique bits(bashfully because of market obbligations, because market dictates players are scared of innovation bits), ultimately strangling them. Another example would be Fallen Earth... scavenging SEEMS to be a unique element, but in the end it's choked by the fact that a player scavenges only to level up, to sell those wrecked parts, to upgrade the same old talents, to make recipes, to craft stuff in the same old way... it's in the end the same old game... if these elements had been developed more thoroughly, making up mini-games from ZERO, new global objectives, new activities that change the player's point of view, instead of gear farming, loot, and having the best template, they would have given the whole game an original identity. Obviously they didn't and are destined to fail. It's exactly the objectives, that determine a WoW clone, the reason for doing things. Even if you do certain things in a new way, the old recycled clichés will still cover the reason for doing them, crushing every trace of innovation.

This is the difference between videogames and xyyxxxqqx virtual worlds... when MMO makers will understand this, a new era will most likely begin, everyone will realize that the future of cinematic, literary and dramatic fictional worlds and settings is not to make film after film, but to become real... their natural evolution is a virtual world because it's not one transposition of class-A products into a collateral class-B random funny gamey that vaguely reminds of that world and uses the names with a license, it's that very fictional world that, thanks to persistancy, in every way becomes alive. I hope one day we can understand the impact of this concept.

What I'm trying to say is, it's a shame that some creators seem to be unaware of this multiplayer organism, because most of these games are good if not great. I believe even a small community can foster a game and its developer. As a kid I spent hours playing Raven's Soldier of Fortune II, playing in clan ladder matches and playing as a regular on several clan servers. It was at a time when, to my peer group, the choice was simply Counter-Strike. I chose to devote more time to SoF II, along with thousands of others to Counter-Strike's hundreds of thousands. The community persisted for some time and I believe that sort of following helped solidify Raven as a quality developer in the eyes of fans and other developers. Even if it turns out they didn't make a fortune, they survived and with good marks.

We all gushed over it -- it was made just for us. Now, Section 8 was made for Tribes fans -- maybe Battlefield fans xyyxxxqqx in actuality. But it failed to be a better version of those games; the quality here still matters, and so does market saturation. Battlefield fans have a Battlefield game to play right now -- your game will not get those players. As for Tribes fans, you will not get those players if you don't live up to their high expectations, if you don't really aim to be a Tribes-like game. Section 8 served fans a lukewarm meal while someone else had already prepared a hot meal for them. Fans are out there, and I want to believe they're eager to split off and find new games, to join new communities and learn new rules; get better at new games. I believe all gamers want this.
